Advent 2021: Connecting with God in All Seasons by Gary & Margie Jones

“Every valley will be lifted up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the uneven ground will become smooth and the rough places, a plain. And the glory of the Lord will appear, and all humanity together will see it, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

-Isaiah 40:4-5

Connecting with God in all Seasons

Restricted movement during the COVID-19 pandemic brought a greater spiritual sense and appreciation for the beauty of God’s creations when Margie and I ventured out. During the spring and summer, we intentionally found ways to be in the midst of nature. We enjoyed walks where the scenery of God’s work could easily be viewed and appreciated.

Previously the end of summer, onset of fall, and eventual transition to cooler temperatures, falling leaves and less daylight, would suspend outdoor activities until warmer weather returned. Since the onset of the pandemic, chirping birds, changing foliage, and the first snowflakes, brought a new and greater appreciation for God’s creations. The beauty of seasonal changes has inspired us to find new ways to continue our spiritual ventures.

Advent is the perfect time to reflect, meditate and re-affirm a spirit of thankfulness; we have been blessed by Jesus’ birth and God’s presence in our lives. Like our ventures, the spirit of Advent does not have to be limited to one season, but celebration can be continued through all seasons.

Prayer

All-knowing and omnipotent God, we are thankful for the birth of your son Jesus Christ and the blessing of your creations and presence in our lives through all seasons. Amen.

Advent 2021

Join us in a time of reflection, expectation, and contemplation during the season of Advent 2021.

Each day a new reflection with a scripture and prayer will be posted on the Metropolitan AME Church website and social media to encourage you to hear the words of those reflecting, anticipating, and contemplating with you in community as we thank God for what God has done, notice what God is actively doing and anticipate what God will do next.

Read along with us each day or download the book to read and write along with us offline.
