Advent 2021: Jesus Our Sweetest Gift by Jocelyn Harris

The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

-Romans 6:23b

Best Christmas Ever

Jesus came to save the world. (John 3:17b) The candy cane, a red and white minty confection in the shape of a hook adorns the Christmas tree. The candy cane offers vast symbolisms of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ as it relates to Christmas.

  • “White,” symbolizes the Virgin Birth, purity, and sinless nature of Jesus.

  • The large “Red” stripe represents the blood that Jesus shed to save us from our sins and have Eternal Life.

  • The three small stripes have two symbolisms: representation of the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Jesus’ scouring by which we are healed.

  • The hard candy symbolizes the “Solid Rock,” the foundation of the church, and the firmness of the promises of God.

  • The peppermint flavor, from the aromatic herb hyssop, symbolizes Jesus’ purity and the sacrifice he made.

  • The candy cane “J” represents Jesus who was born as our Savior, and the downside represents the staff of the “Good Shepherd” who reaches down to lift fallen lambs, who like sheep have gone astray.

When you see the candy cane, always remember Jesus, our “Sweetest Gift,” and His Great Love that came at Christmas, and lasts throughout eternity. Jesus came to the world as a “Good Shepherd” to lay down His life for His sheep. (John 10:11b)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, remind us that you are our Greatest Gift for Christmas, who came that we might have Eternal Life. Amen

Advent 2021

Join us in a time of reflection, expectation, and contemplation during the season of Advent 2021.

Each day a new reflection with a scripture and prayer will be posted on the Metropolitan AME Church website and social media to encourage you to hear the words of those reflecting, anticipating, and contemplating with you in community as we thank God for what God has done, notice what God is actively doing and anticipate what God will do next.

Read along with us each day or download the book to read and write along with us offline.
