Lent 2022: Perseverance till it is Finished by Pius Bola Akinola

Perseverance till it is Finished

Bishop Harry Seawright delivered the eulogy at the celebration of life for Bishop William Phillips DeVeaux. In his message one word prevailed—perseverance. Ironically, the word appears in the Living Bible translation 27 times. For the gospel to be fulfilled, Jesus perseveres.

When we, the church, captured, interrogated, tortured, and sentenced him to death, Jesus did not quit. He could easily come down from the cross, but He remained and died for our sins.

Friends, how many times have we started and quit because the task was very difficult? How many times have we withdrawn from a situation because we could not predict the outcome? How many times have we questioned our faith in the Lord when major challenges tested our faith? As we celebrate Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice, we should not quit. If and only if we stay the course and remain steadfast, I’m convinced; we too will have the ability to glorify God and say, “It is finished.”

Prayer

Eternal and Everlasting God, we humbly ask You to give us the faith and the tenacity to stay the course and not quit regardless of the challenge. Give us courage, patience, endurance, and willingness to remain faithful until our end. In the name of the One who sacrificed His life so we may live, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
