Advent 2021: We Are Christmas by Dana Williams

We Are Christmas

One of the small joys of the COVID-19 pandemic was the rediscovery of musical performances during the advent season that might otherwise have slid under the radar. One of my favorites last season was the Spelman College Glee Club performance of "We Are Christmas" from their 2018 combined Christmas concert with Morehouse College's Glee Club. Written by Sarah Stephens and Kevin Johnson, the song, which was beautifully imagined and beautifully performed, reminds us of our role as co-creators with God.

Yes, Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus; yes, Mary was his virgin mother; and yes, the savior came to redeem us all. Indeed, there was something remarkable about Jesus's birth. But that's not all. We, too, are remarkable manifestations of God. We are Christ among us, the lyrics remind us. We live to fulfill Jesus's purpose.

The beauty of the advent season is that it inspires us to be kind to one another. Let us be reminded this season not just to celebrate Christmas but to embody the sentiment of God living among us.

We are comfort for the hurting, mending each broken heart.

We are friendly to the lonesome and unite those far apart.

We are his hands who touch the sick, and they are instantly whole.

We are water for the thirsty and speak peace to ev'ry soul.

Christ lives in me. Christ lives in you.

Forever one with God, we are Christmas.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessing of creativity and expression. Amen.

Advent 2021

Join us in a time of reflection, expectation, and contemplation during the season of Advent 2021.

Each day a new reflection with a scripture and prayer will be posted on the Metropolitan AME Church website and social media to encourage you to hear the words of those reflecting, anticipating, and contemplating with you in community as we thank God for what God has done, notice what God is actively doing and anticipate what God will do next.

Read along with us each day or download the book to read and write along with us offline.
