Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Rev. Jon Robinson

Leader: After being cut off from home and heritage, cut down to build somebody else’s prosperity, Lord we come.

People: Cut off from sacred songs, ancestral traditions, and generational culture that kept us together for so long, Lord we come.

Leader: Cut off by a world that expects more misery and more money, Lord we come.

People: Cut off by systems that delight in evil and ignore righteousness, Lord we come.

Leader: But because we serve God who judges people like us with righteousness, God will send a righteous judge, like a shoot out of a stump, like the stump of Jesse.

People: Because God is with us, the wolf will dwell with the lamb, like a shoot out of a stump.

Leader: Let your spirit of wisdom and understanding rise up in us, like a shoot out of a stump.

People: We expect you to help us grow powerful and united, righteous and holy, even in a sinful world, like a root out of a stump.

Angels We Have Heard on High

African American Heritage Hymnal #118

United Voices of Metropolitan

Angels we have heard on high

Sweetly singing o’er the plains,

And the mountains in reply

echoing their joyous strains.

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee?

Why your joyous strains prolong?

What the gladsome tidings be,

Which inspire your heav'nly song.

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see

Him whose birth the angels sing;

Come, adore on bended knee,

Christ the Lord, the new-born King.

Gloria in excelsis Deo,

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Matthew 3:1-12 NRSVUE

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ”Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the River Jordan, confessing their sins.

 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?  Therefore, bear fruit worthy of repentance,  and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.  Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I, and I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Solicitation - Pastor William H. Lamar IV

General Confession - led by Pastor William H. Lamar IV

Almighty God, Mother and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all people, we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed by thought, word and deed against Your divine Majesty, provoking most justly your wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Parent for Your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake; forgive us all that is past and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please You in newness of life, to the honor and glory of Your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

The Lord's Prayer - led by Pastor William H. Lamar IV

Our Father and Our Mother, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
