Advent 2021: What Shall I Do? by Thedford Collins

‘"In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.' This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah."

-Matthew 3:1-3a

What Shall I Do?

This year has been tough, but it has been a blessing also. When I look toward this Advent, I remember the lessons I have learned over the years about how God sent his Son for our benefit. When I was trying to decide what to write for my meditation, I met a young woman minister who shared with me how she landed her current job:

She was and is working for a non-profit where she had a white supervisor who was not committed to the work in their predominately African American community. One day her supervisor announced, “I’m out.” She thought this was unfair of him, but wondered, what shall I do. Well, she learned the job and served as Program Director while the Board looked for a new Executive Director. After two years they offered her the job.

She could have left when her supervisor left, but she knew that the community needed the services provided. I think God placed her there because she has the right skills and spirit to do the work. We can all do what we are called to do and like that young woman, help because the kingdom of heaven is coming for us all.

Prayer

Father, help us to know that everything is not about us. Amen

Advent 2021

Join us in a time of reflection, expectation, and contemplation during the season of Advent 2021.

Each day a new reflection with a scripture and prayer will be posted on the Metropolitan AME Church website and social media to encourage you to hear the words of those reflecting, anticipating, and contemplating with you in community as we thank God for what God has done, notice what God is actively doing and anticipate what God will do next.

Read along with us each day or download the book to read and write along with us offline.
