Advent 2021: Wisdom by Reverend Sandra Butler-Truesdale

“For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”

-Proverbs 2:6

15th Day After Christmas

January 9, 2022

Wisdom

“Wisdom (n.) -- the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement, the quality of being wise.” Wisdom is typically associated with knowledge or enlightenment and experience or understanding or common sense. It is the trait of utilizing and applying knowledge and experience with common sense and insight. In the former sense wisdom is the quality of being sensible and prudent.

I have heard the word wisdom most of my life. Even as a young woman in the church I remember the preacher speaking about wisdom. I loved reading Proverbs. In Proverbs 4:7 “wisdom is supreme; therefore, get wisdom.” The books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are called the “wisdom literature.” The sages of the ancient Near East realized the superiority of wisdom over knowledge, for wisdom encompasses knowledge and includes understanding and moral conduct.

God has blessed me to live a long, productive life. I have learned that patience and wisdom are not always equated with eldership. My experience in life has taught me that wisdom is earned through study as the scripture records, “study to show yourself approved.”

As God has allowed me to grow in grace, it is not so much the reading of the scripture, but the application of the scripture to your life which brings wisdom.

Prayer

Lord, God, thank you for spiritual growth and the gift of wisdom. Amen

Reverend Dr. Sandra Butler-Truesdale
