“Thy Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”

It Is Written
Years ago, my sister and I thought it would be challenging and fun to memorize some of our favorite scriptures – something we hadn’t done since we were kids in Sunday School. We were inspired by Dr. Pam DeVeaux at a missionary meeting where she prayed scripture asking that we be filled with the Fruit of the Holy Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. My sister and I selected several Psalms, the Beatitudes, Galatians 5: 22-23, and several passages from the Gospel of John to commit to memory.
Memorizing scripture has its rewards. Among other things it draws you closer to God, makes God’s word readily accessible for the Holy Spirit to use for your benefit, strengthens your faith, brings to mind the promises of God, helps you to be calm and peaceful, protects your mind from evil thoughts and fills it with God and His fruit.
Jesus quoted Scripture when he was tempted by Satan three times in the wilderness. Each time Jesus rebuked Satan with, “It is written ………..” It is recorded that Jesus quoted scripture from The Old Testament more than 100 times. Since Jesus memorized scripture and we are being transformed into His image, this practice may help us become more Christ-like.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, open our hearts and minds so we may receive Your gifts and use them in our daily living.
