Lent 2022: Lent In A Pandemic by Maria Wallace

…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.

-Luke 10:27

Lent In A Pandemic

This is the third Lenten season of the COVID-19 pandemic. We await the return to communal worship, albeit with thoughtful restrictions and guidelines. With the vaccines, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and our new normal. But more deeply than that, during Lent we continue to emphasize prayer, fasting and charity.

At this time, my trust in the Lord has been challenged greatly. Usually, I take pride in doing things for the Lord. I send daily affirmations/greetings and have increased the number of the people for whom I pray. However, sickness remains all around me.

I could be more tolerant of others' opinions. I could empathize more and try to understand what it is to walk in other people's shoes, a true test of my faith. I could give more time and intentionally listen to others; time is valuable and listening heals. It sometimes heals the listener and the speaker.

I have discovered that the simple things in life anchor us. Despite the complexities of our society, spiritual, social, or moral support offered in a simple telephone call or through social media can warm our hearts and disrupt the sense of isolation, fear, and loss.

Prayer

God, we ask that you teach us to act justly, love mercifully, and walk humbly. We give thanks for the new vaccines and may we continue to support each other. Amen.
