Lent 2022: Looking Upon Jesus by Christene Chambliss

"Looking upon Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

-Hebrews 12:2

Looking Upon Jesus

I used to get angry if someone would invade the territory which I had defined as mine. In my mind it was always the fault of others and never my fault. These fits of anger always left me feeling inadequate and displeased with my conduct. It also began to cause trouble for me. The others I blamed did not have any of the problems I was going through.

I knew I had to get some help. So I prayed and asked God to help me. One night I was attending a meeting and during the evening prayers we sang, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look into His wonderful face, the things on earth will grow strangely dim in the eyes of His Glory and Grace.” That was my answer.

Now whenever anger lurks, I turn my eyes upon Jesus, and I am able to walk away, cool down, be quiet, and think! Praise God!

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for helping me to refuse to fix my eyes on the troubles and the troublers that make me angry. Give me the courage and strength to fix my eyes on You so that I may be more like You; kind, compassionate, loving and forgiving. In Your own dear name. Amen.
