Attention all Active Duty, Reserve, Guard, and Veterans - Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church is forming a Veteran Council that will guide our ministry in supporting and addressing the needs of those who are serving and those who have served our nation. The purpose of this council is to extend the arms of fellowship by offering spiritual support that is focused on the military and veteran communities and providing a network of support for the specific needs of these communities. Our first meeting is scheduled following church service on Sunday, September 3, 2023. For more information, contact Dr. Bryon L. Garner at bryongarner@gmail.com.

The Sarah Allen Missionary Society Food Bank of the Metropolitan AME Church is excited to announce that in-person food bank operations, will resume on Saturday, September 23 from 9 am to 3 pm.

Please see the flyer with a link to sign up for volunteer opportunities with the SAMS Food Bank. For more information, please contact Sister Virginia Boateng at vab-59@hotmail.com.

Please join us for the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes as we “Build Wellness Together.” Nearly 133 million people in the U.S. have Diabetes or prediabetes, and 283,000 under the age of 20 are estimated to have been diagnosed with Diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (A.D.A.) believes in focusing on one goal at a time and setting “S.M.A.R.T.” goals to help you reach your health goals. It is not one giant step that changes your health. It is lots of little steps, and the A.D.A. wants to be part of that journey. Come and walk with us and let’s start that journey together.

Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church has been selected for the Smart Surfaces Environmental Justice Initiative grant

The justice and liberation work of Metropolitan continues with a $735,000 grant over 3 years from the Waverley Street Foundation. The grant seeks to alleviate the suffering of mostly Black people living in hot, inhumane environments. The grant is to facilitate the work with the Smart Surfaces Coalition to develop training and educational materials that will be used to equip church leaders in the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, The Bronx/Harlem, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Sacramento, to:

  • Organize coalitions to work with city and metro-area policy makers toward the adoption of Smart Surfaces and

  • Fund (through micro grants) innovative, climate action interventions within their local communities.

The three primary areas of work include:

  • Training and Education;

  • Faith Community Outreach and Engagement and

  • Providing micro grants to churches and community-based organizations to spark innovative climate action interventions.

...we are answering God’s call for the present age. We are planning to provide housing for unhoused veterans. We fight ecological apartheid and climate injustice by organizing people around the nation to ensure that Black, brown, and poor communities are not doomed to be stifling heat islands... We fight the displacement of Black people in the District of Columbia. We stand up against legislation that would further criminalize Black youth in our city.
-Pastor William H. Lamar IV
