In 2025, we will introduce a weekly Sankofa moment. Sankofa comes from the Adinkra cultural system and means, "It is not taboo to return and fetch it when you forget." Each Sunday, as part of our Sankofa practice, we will "fetch" the wisdom, words, faith, and lessons learned from our ancestors. At Metropolitan AME Church, we are dedicated to honoring the legacies of our past while actively working toward our future. This weekly Sankofa moment is not just a one-time event, but a commitment to our cultural heritage that we will uphold continuously. Ashe and Amen.

We are pleased to announce that transportation services resumed on January 5, 2025, after a long hiatus. Starting in January, transportation will be available on the first and third Sundays of each month. Services may be expanded to other Sundays based on the demand. If you are interested in transportation to and from the church, please contact Ellen and Tyrone Fizer at 301-579-2482. We look forward to serving you and helping you get to church with ease!

The Freedom Table will be made available most Sundays in Douglass Hall (except Sundays when there are post-worship events/activities) for families that need to step out of the Sanctuary for a freedom space for active students while still being able to watch service. Middle and high school students are needed to help set up and clean up in exchange for student service hours.

Please e-mail Youthministry@metropolitanamec.org for the Schedule and Volunteer information.

Join us for our Youth Annual Day on Sunday, June 8th, at 10 a.m. Our guest Speaker will be the Rev Khristi Lauren Adams, author of Parable of the Brown Girl, Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way, and Womanish Theology.

The SEDLO Ways & Means Committee and the Kelly Lay Organization are requesting your support to provide supplemental funds for the Davis-McKinney Scholarship through the Dollars for Scholars Campaign. The “ask” is for each person to contribute at least $1.00 toward the scholarship fund that will be used to provide assistance to Deserving students.

Take Your Faith to the Streets This Pentecost On Tuesday, June 10, people of faith will gather at the U.S. Capitol for A Pentecost Witness for a Moral Budget.

We are witnessing against a proposed federal budget that slashes life-saving support for the most vulnerable. Together, we’ll sing, pray, and speak truth to power. This is a moment for moral courage.

Cozette, church staff, and congregation members who supported the three-month process. Ministry members will be meeting today with various leads of potential partnering ministries to share highlights of the process, priorities discerned and a vision of the ministry development plan. The ways to best inform the congregation as a whole will be discussed and shared in the coming weeks. To contact the ministry co-leads, Rev. It is with deep regret that the Metropolitan Scholarship Endowment Committee must announce the decision to cancel the 32nd Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon, due to circumstances beyond our control.  A presidential birthday celebration and day-long military parade are scheduled for the same date, Saturday, June 14, 2025.  As a result, all roads leading to the church will be blocked.  We apologize for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause.

The Scholarship Endowment Committee will process refunds for those who purchased tickets and request a refund by sending an email to the scholarship committee at paynetannermemorial1@gmail.com.  The Metropolitan Scholarship Committee will still award scholarships this year.  Scholarship recipients will be recognized during the Youth Annual Day service on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

We are exceedingly grateful for your support of our recipients.  Your contributions help us continue the mission of providing financial assistance to our bright students who will make a difference in their communities, across the nation, and around the world.  Donations to the Scholarship Endowment can be made online until June 14, 2025, using the Eventbrite link.  Contributions to the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church Scholarship Endowment are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.

The Daniel Alexander Payne Community Development Committee will host the first of a series of Financial Empowerment Workshops in Frederick Douglass Hall, from Noon to 3:00pm. The workshops will focus on “Navigating the Current Job Market” and “Managing A Investment Portfolio in a Volatile Market.” The program will feature two panel discussions with professionals who will provide insightful information and tips. Register using the QR code above or via this form. Reach out to a member of the Payne CDC if you have questions.

The Christian Recorder (TCR), in partnership with the Second Episcopal District Lay Organization, (SEDLO), is launching a paper subscription campaign. This initiative does not include digital subscriptions.

TCR is soliciting at least 100 paper subscriptions (not digital) across the Second Episcopal District, which equates to 20 subscriptions (or more) per Conference. The cost of the subscription is $36 annually.

If there are any questions, or to place your order, please contact me (Sis. Maria Wallace) at mwallacedst@gmail.com.  Please see the flyer on the tables at the back of the church for more information.

We hope you can stand with us by investing in the Community Justice Fund and purchasing a limited edition commemorative t-shirt. In these unprecedented times, we are called to continue doing the work of Jesus in the church, the community, and the world. Every contribution will make a difference as we counter the radical ideology and rhetoric that is flowing from the leaders of our Nation while eroding and eliminating civil rights and societal strides that have been made by the sacrifices of our elders and ancestors.

Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1838.  From its founding, Metropolitan AME Church, has and continues to do what other churches will not. We are known locally, nationally, and internationally, to be deeply spiritual and deeply engaged in the world. From anti-slavery leadership in the mid-19th century, in the harboring of runaway slaves, to organizing power, people and money toward the flourishing of all people in the District of Columbia today. Metropolitan has been not just a significant center of worship, but also an institution in the forefront of the civic, cultural, and intellectual life among African Americans and others. Today, Metropolitan is focused on theologically sound teaching and preaching in worship; combatting food insecurity through our Food Bank; addressing ecological devastation by addressing heat islands in metropolitan cities with Smart Surfaces Coalition; equipping parents and families with culturally responsive and biblically grounded teaching through the Sankofa project; and building Black Equity and Wealth through Homeownership, prioritizing community safety and holding political leaders accountable with Washington Interfaith Network.
-Pastor William H. Lamar IV
