Pastoral Concerns for the Week of December 6, 2020

Greetings Metropolitan family and friends,

The Advent season is here! I pray daily for the health and safety of you and your family and for peace and justice all over the world.

Please join me in extending birthday and anniversary wishes to everyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary in December. You received an email earlier this week from Sis. Ruth Fulwood listing the specific dates. Take a moment to celebrate with friends and family ask the mark another turn around the sun.

Weekday “Meditations with Metropolitan” continue this week from 7-7:15am. Among our December presenters are the Mighty Men of Metropolitan and the Married Couples ministries. If you would like to offer a meditation or have prayer requests, email the Morning Meditations team at prayer.metro1518@gmail.com.

We will serve Holy Communion as a part of our virtual worship experience again this first Sunday. We believe that the tables in our homes and the food we share, like the altar and communion we serve in the building, are holy because they are God’s good gifts to us. As a reminder, we invite you to create your own communion table. If possible, use bread or crackers and grape juice or wine. You can also feel free to be directed by God’s Spirit for an acceptable substitute.

Noonday and Pastor’s Study continue this week. Join us Wednesdays at noon as we continue to study the book of Proverbs and Wednesdays at 7pm as we study Paul’s letter to the Romans.

We hope you will also join us on Saturday’s at 11am for Café Met on Facebook and YouTube.

The Love and Peace unit of the Sarah Allen Missionary Society invites each of you to support the Christmas project (formerly the Angel Tree project) by purchasing gift cards in $25 or $50 increments or by making a financial contribution. Mail gift cards directly to the Love and Peace unit (P.O. Box #7371 | Silver Spring, MD 20907) For more information, contact Sis. Dianne Black, Sis. Verna Brogden, or Sis. Pamela Waring.

The Metropolitan Church School Christmas party will be held on Fri. Dec 11, from 7-8pm. Please plan to join! There will be music, fun, and fellowship. Please register in advance at https://forms.gle/4n6k11JkidgdDYEm7.

Mark your calendars now for the Metropolitan Church School Christmas program. The Zoom log-in information will be provided.

We are excited to celebrate Princess Lilia Choice, who placed 2nd place in the Washington Conference Women’s Missionary Society Dorcas Contest, Catherine C. Hemingway Area, Category B.

We also congratulate Sis. Ryane Nickens on her nomination by Tiny Jewel Box as a community hero, in celebration of Tiny Jewel Box’s 90th anniversary.

Your giving is a wonderful expression of God’s generosity. As we celebrate 182 years of ministry as Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, we are asking each member to consider making a gift of $1,820, $1,082, $782, $582, $282, $182, or $18.20 by December 31, 2020. We also ask that you continue to give weekly or monthly in one of these ways: via check mailed to Metropolitan AME Church, via credit card on the website, and via text or Cash App. To text to give, text “metro1518” to 73256; our Cash App handle is $MetropolitanAME. We have long been and will continue to be good stewards of your giving.

This week, we mourn the passing of Faye Fields. Please be in prayer for her family. We also pray for Sis. Susan Edwards in the passing of two aunts; Mother Speaks in the passing of her cousin; Sis. Carmen Dupree in the passing of her cousin; and Sis. Lakeisha Brown in the passing of her aunt.

Please continue to pray for health, strength, and healing all of those in need. We ask especially for your prayers for Deaconess Beverly Lee, Sis. Rosemarie Elliott, Sis. Janice Ferebee, Bro. Lacey Flagg, Dr. Mercedes Dickson, Rev. Aisha Karimah, Sister Ruby Joyce, Dr. Charles Curry, Deaconess Mary Burroughs, Deaconess Jeanette Spicer, and Mother Ethel Delaney Lee.

Your faithfulness continues to be a testament to our joy and resilience in these challenging times. We hope you will stay connected with us—daily for morning meditation, on Wednesdays for study, on Saturdays for Cafe MET, and on Sundays for worship.

Grace and Peace,

Bill Lamar
